Just Deserts (JD) is a sci-fi action game meets dating simulator developed by Vifth Floor and published by Sekai Project. JD puts you in the role of an unnamed lieutenant being sent out to what seems like a forward operating base camp when he discovers the main staff are all women and you are under attack from aliens. The story might sound weird, but the game is better than its story makes it out to be, flaws and all.

First impressions of Just Deserts were a lot of “huh”s and “how”s. I have played both sci-fi action games and dating simulators but to merge the two felt like odd move, especially for Vifth Floor. Surprisingly, the game turned out to be a unique twist on a dating simulator that was welcomed more than hated. The intro screen to the game is simple but for a game like a dating simulator, it does the job, alongside the techno and pop style soundtrack the game offers.

When merging two different types of gameplay such as a dating simulator and an action game, there are no doubt going to be some stuff changed to make it equal. JD takes the best of both worlds and puts it together into one game, a feat I have to give thumbs up to. The controls were good, not too simple for visual novel or dating simulator players and not too crazy for newer players to the genre. Remembering what mode you are in will be key as well as how much you work on the relationship with each girl as you only have one month in game for playtime, and your relationship status will affect your ending. There are multiple endings with JD though, so you will get your money’s worth time-wise with this game, plus the endings differ based on which girl you chose.

With the presentation of Just Deserts, you get the feeling of an animated movie, but with less movement of characters. Visually, JD sports a hand drawn type of art style, which does give less movement of character, as they are two dimensional in design, but it also allows for more emotion on the characters face to shine through. The backgrounds sport this hand drawn effect as well, which is very pleasing to the eye, even the harsh and bright desert scenes. Musically, JD is orchestrated very well with a large variety of musical offerings based on the occasion you find yourself in. A lot of the music tends to have a pop flare to it, emphasizing the heat of battle or importance of a location, but the few classical pieces thrown in like at night time offer a calm and serene feel to the busy story.

Overall, Just Deserts is a dating simulator with a sci-fi flare that does not miss a beat of either genre. Sporting hand drawn style graphics, a well orchestrated soundtrack, unified controls for both styles of gameplay, and a drawn out story make this game a must play. Even though the story can feel short due to the nature of multiple endings, and balancing working with the girls to working on your alien fighting gear, which can feel tight.

I highly recommend this game to dating sim players, as well as visual novel players, as it feels similar to a visual novel with a combat mechanic. Sci-fi action gamers will enjoy this as well, though the focus on the dating portion may drive some away.
